Over ninety years we have provided the best quality meats
to the Greater Lowell area!!! Lowell Provision Company legacy began with the
first generation of Doyle's in 1913. Morrill Doyle, an immigrant from CANADA
opened up the meat market in 1913 on Moody Street, Lowell, Massachusetts. At
that time there was no such thing as refrigeration. Meat was kept cool with
blocks of ice cut from the Merrimack River and insulated with straw and sawdust
lasting a whole year. Each winter new ice was cut from the river and the
iceboxes were repacked and reinsulated.
World War II was a difficult time for Lowell area businesses. Morrill's son Robert is drafted, meat is rationed and food is allotted by ration stamps. However, Morrill kept Lowell Provision going by supplying to institutions and paying attention to Greater Lowell's buying habits. WWII ended and it was back to business as usual.
Robert Doyle took over the family business in 1946 with focus on high quality product and service. In the 1960's with urban renewal changes in the Moody Street area, Lowell Provision Company moves to 23 Aiken Avenue, Lowell Massachusetts. The new Lowell Provision Company is larger and is able to offer the retail store that we know and love today.
Nine children later, Robert begins to utilize the older children at the store. Most of the children started sweeping floors but worked themselves up to full time butcher and eventual owners. Lowell Provision Company expanded in 1989 and opened Alpine Butcher Shop in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Today, three of Roberts's children own and operate Lowell Provision Company. Both meat markets offer individualized customer care; specialty cuts of meat and in-house prepared gourmet food.
